The top-spec Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge Ultimate Twin Motor is a fully-loaded, fast, luxurious electric SUV. Here's why our Japanese-imported examples are such a smart buy in NZ

If you want an electric SUV that combines genuine luxury, serious performance, and that unmistakable understated Scandinavian cool, it is hard to go past the Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge. And in top-spec Ultimate Twin Motor form, imported from Japan, these are some of the most quietly desirable used EVs you can buy in New Zealand right now.

We love these cars, and the versions we bring in are the fully-loaded ones, so you get the premium Volvo experience without the premium new-car price tag. Here is our honest take on why the XC40 and C40 Recharge Ultimate deserves a serious spot on your shortlist.

XC40 or C40: what's the difference?

These two cars are mechanically identical twins under the skin, sharing the same platform, the same battery, the same motors, and the same interior. The difference is purely the body style, and it comes down to personal taste.

The XC40 Recharge

is the classic compact SUV shape, with an upright roofline, maximum practicality, and the most headroom and boot space. It is the more conventional, family-friendly choice.

The C40 Recharge

is the style-led option, a coupe-SUV with a sleek, sloping roofline that looks fantastic. It trades a little rear headroom and boot height for a more head-turning silhouette. If you love the way it looks, that is reason enough to choose it.

Both drive identically, so the decision is simply about whether you prioritise outright practicality (XC40) or coupe-SUV style (C40). You cannot go wrong either way.

A quick note on the naming: XC40/C40 and EX40/EC40

Volvo's naming here can cause a bit of confusion, so it is worth clearing up. When these cars launched, they were called the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. In 2024, Volvo renamed its electric models to separate them more clearly from its petrol and hybrid range, so the XC40 Recharge became the EX40, and the C40 Recharge became the EC40.

The cars themselves are essentially the same. So if you see an XC40 Recharge, a C40 Recharge, an EX40, or an EC40, you are looking at the same fundamental vehicle, just from different points in its naming history. On imported Japanese examples you will most commonly see the original Recharge badging. Do not let the naming throw you.

The Ultimate Twin Motor: the one to have

Here is the important part for New Zealand buyers. The versions we import are the top-of-the-range Ultimate specification with the Twin Motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. This is the flagship, the fully-loaded, no-expense-spared version, and it is a genuinely lovely thing.

The performance. The Twin Motor setup uses two electric motors, one on each axle, for full all-wheel drive. Total output is a substantial 300kW (around 408 horsepower) and 660Nm of torque, which launches this compact SUV from 0 to 100km/h in around 4.9 seconds. That is genuine performance-car pace in a practical, understated family SUV. The all-wheel-drive traction also makes it a confident, sure-footed car in all conditions, which suits New Zealand's varied roads and weather beautifully.

The battery and range. The Twin Motor uses an 82kWh battery (around 78 to 79kWh usable), delivering a WLTP range of up to around 480 to 500km depending on the exact year and build. In real-world New Zealand driving, that is genuinely usable long-distance range, comfortably handling commutes, weekends away, and road trips. DC fast charging at up to 100kW means a 10 to 80% top-up takes around 45 minutes at a compatible charger, and it uses the Chademo connector compatible with New Zealand's public charging network.

The Ultimate specification. This is where these cars really shine. While equipment can vary slightly between individual cars, so always confirm the specification on the specific vehicle, the Ultimate trim typically includes a genuinely premium level of kit:

  • The superb 13-speaker, 600-watt Harman Kardon premium sound system, complete with an air-ventilated subwoofer, one of the best-sounding audio systems in any car at this level, and not available on lower trims
  • Pixel LED headlights, Volvo's most advanced adaptive lighting technology
  • A fixed panoramic glass roof that floods the cabin with light
  • A 360-degree surround-view camera for effortless parking
  • Volvo's beautiful leather-free interior, using premium sustainable materials including microtech and suede-textile upholstery, tasteful and genuinely upmarket
  • Heated front seats, heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats
  • Pilot Assist, Volvo's semi-autonomous driving aid, along with adaptive cruise control
  • The 9-inch portrait touchscreen running the built-in Google system, with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Play Store baked in, plus wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless phone charging
  • An air quality system with air purifier
  • Power front seats with memory
  • 20-inch alloy wheels

This is a specification list that genuinely rivals cars costing far more, and it all comes as standard on the Ultimate.

Why buy our Japanese-imported examples?

Volvo's electric SUVs were sold new in New Zealand, but at a premium price that put the top-spec versions out of reach for a lot of buyers. By importing the Ultimate Twin Motor from Japan, we can offer you the very best version of these cars, fully loaded, at a price that makes far more sense.

Japan is an excellent source market for these vehicles. Japanese-market cars are right-hand drive, just like ours, they are typically very well looked after, often low mileage, and they come highly specified. It means you get a genuinely premium, low-use example of Volvo's flagship electric SUV without paying the new-car premium that put many people off when these first launched here.

What it's really like to live with

That Volvo interior. Volvo has a real gift for interiors, and the Recharge twins are among their best. The cabin is calm, beautifully finished, and refreshingly free of fuss. The leather-free materials feel genuinely premium rather than a compromise, the seats are among the most comfortable in the business, famously supportive on long drives, and everything feels solid and built to last. It is a lovely, relaxing place to spend time, which is exactly what you want in a daily driver.

The sound system is a genuine highlight. If you care at all about music, the Harman Kardon system in the Ultimate is a real treat. With 13 speakers, 600 watts, and that air-ventilated subwoofer, it is one of the best-sounding systems in any car at this price, and because there is no engine noise to intrude, you hear every detail. It is the kind of feature you will use and enjoy every single day.

The drive. The Twin Motor Ultimate is quick, there is no getting around it, but it is the way it delivers that pace that impresses. It is smooth, quiet, and effortless, with the instant torque making overtaking and merging completely stress-free. The all-wheel-drive traction inspires confidence, the ride is comfortable and composed, and the whole car feels solid, safe, and planted. It is refined and relaxing when you want it to be, and genuinely rapid when you ask for it.

Practicality. The XC40 body in particular is a genuinely practical family SUV, with a good boot, useful storage, and a clever front boot (a "frunk") for your charging cables. The C40 trades a little practicality for style but remains perfectly usable day to day. Both will tow a modest trailer, and both swallow the weekly family duties without complaint.

Safety: it's a Volvo, after all

Safety is in Volvo's DNA, and the Recharge twins are no exception. These cars come loaded with Volvo's comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance systems, typically including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, and large-animal detection, lane keeping aid, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, and Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous highway driving. The 360-degree camera on the Ultimate makes parking and manoeuvring genuinely easy.

The XC40 has a long history of top-tier safety performance in independent crash testing, and the low-mounted battery gives the electric versions an extra stability and crash-safety advantage from their low centre of gravity. If putting your family in one of the safest cars on the road matters to you, this is a very reassuring choice. As always, confirm the specific safety equipment fitted to any individual imported vehicle.

Who is the XC40 / C40 Recharge Ultimate for?

This car suits a particular kind of buyer beautifully:

  • Someone who wants genuine luxury and premium brand appeal without the premium new-car price
  • A buyer who appreciates understated, tasteful Scandinavian design over flashy badges
  • Anyone who wants strong performance, with the Twin Motor's sub-5-second 0 to 100km/h pace
  • Families who want a safe, practical, beautifully-built SUV (the XC40) or style-led buyers who want something a bit special (the C40)
  • Music lovers who will genuinely appreciate that Harman Kardon system
  • Buyers who want the fully-loaded Ultimate specification at a sensible, import-enabled price

The honest considerations

In the interests of giving you the full picture:

It's a parallel import, so buy from someone who does the homework. As with any imported used EV, confirm the battery state of health, check that any recalls have been completed, and verify the exact specification of the individual car. Buying from a dealer that has done this groundwork removes essentially all of the risk.

The Twin Motor prioritises performance over maximum range. The single-motor versions of these cars actually offer slightly more range, because two motors use a little more energy. The Twin Motor's up-to-around-500km is still genuinely usable, but if absolute maximum range is your single priority over performance and all-wheel drive, it is worth being aware of the trade-off. For most buyers, the performance and traction of the Twin Motor is well worth it.

Coupe styling costs some practicality on the C40. The C40's sloping roof looks great but does reduce rear headroom and boot height compared to the XC40. If practicality is your top priority, the XC40 is the more sensible pick.

The portrait screen controls most functions. Like many modern cars, a lot of controls live in the touchscreen. Most owners adapt quickly, and the Google system is one of the better ones to use, but it is worth a short familiarisation on your test drive.

The bottom line

The Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge Ultimate Twin Motor is a genuinely special electric SUV, combining real luxury, serious performance, class-leading safety, and that unmistakable Volvo sense of calm, understated quality. In top-spec Ultimate form, with its Harman Kardon sound, Pixel LED lighting, panoramic roof, and beautiful leather-free cabin, it wants for nothing.

By importing the fully-loaded versions from Japan, we can put you in the very best of these cars at a price that makes genuine sense. If you want a premium electric SUV that flies a little under the radar while quietly outclassing flashier rivals, the XC40 or C40 Recharge Ultimate is very much worth your attention.
